(Coffee products, coffee recipes, coffee tips, coffee reviews...and more.) This is the UN-SNOBBY Coffee Blog.HappySlobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777781387510158030noreply@blogger.comBlogger210125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25257758.post-871204469412933722012-10-01T19:04:00.002-07:002012-10-01T19:04:16.272-07:00The Easiest Flavored Iced Coffee Recipe EVERA frugal friend of mine (and let me be honest...most of my friends do tend to be fairly careful with their moola) told me an easy, fast and frugal way to make a delicious flavored iced coffee. In fact, it's so simple that I feel a bit silly posting it. Okay, I'm over that...here it is!

Cold coffee (whatever you have leftover in the pot - just pop it in a container in the fridge, ready to make iced coffee whenever you want it)

Ice cubes

Flavored creamer - such as International Delight

All she does is throw some ice cubes into a nice glass (you might as well have your frugal coffee creation look expensive, right?), add a good dose of cold coffee, and then as much of her flavored creamer as it takes to get just the right flavor. I love this idea! It's a great way to use up leftover coffee that you might've thought of (gasp!) pouring down the drain.

Another idea for those of us who don't buy flavored coffee creamers is to simply pour the coffee over ice, and add a little splash of our favorite flavor or extract - such as almond, vanilla, or chocolate. Of course, a little bit of chocolate syrup certainly wouldn't hurt this coffee creation either.

Okay - tell me...what do YOU do with your leftover coffee?
What is your overall rating for the latte? I haven't tried one yet, and have only heard negative feedback so far - that it tastes very 'mixy' but I'd like to hear feedback from all of you.

What would you rate the Tim Hortons lattes out of 10?HappySlobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777781387510158030noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25257758.post-51888453112882398782012-02-17T16:53:00.001-08:002012-02-17T17:11:28.867-08:00A Whole Latte Love at Starbucks - Make an Easy Latte at HomeOkay, so we may never be able to completely recreate the lovely Starbucks ambience at home (oh, how I love to people watch at SB!), but I've come up with a very easy way to make a latte at home - minus all the fuss. If you're looking for a fun, and easy coffee drink to enjoy at home - give this one a try! Please note that this is my easy latte method, and is certainly not the most authentic way to create a lovely, foamy latte drink. But, if you'd like an easy to make latte, I think you'll enjoy this every bit as much as I do.

(Note: My Easy Latte uses freshly brewed coffee instead of the espresso that the drink usually requires. If you'd like to be more authentic, brew up some fresh espresso in a stovetop espresso maker - it's delicious, and less expensive than espresso making appliances. For the rest of us - delicious coffee will do the trick. If you're looking for a fantastic stovetop espresso maker, this one by Bialetti is still made in Italy and is highly rated by consumers:
)

Back to the Easy Latte Method...
What you'll need:
Microwave safe mug
Microwave
Aerolatte foamer (or other brand)
Freshly brewed coffee
1 or 2% milk (skim also works great - in fact, it foams up beautifully)
Sweetener of your choice - I use honey
Sprinkles of cinnamon, nutmeg or both

Of course, the heavenly thing about a delicious latte is the foam. I love the foam, and the latte can, I think, be judged by the success and foaminess of its foam! ;) So, the easiest way I've found to create lovely amounts of foam for my cappuccinos or lattes is by using an Aerolatte - .

Note: Aerolattes really are worth their weight in gold. Aerolatte also completely backs their products - if you ever have any problems they'll replace your Aerolatte foamer for free! Great customer service...I highly recommend this company's products.

1. Foam the milk - I've practiced this, and found that cold milk foams up nicely. I pour about 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup of cold milk into a microwave safe oversized mug. Use your Aerolatte or other foamer to gently create soft mounds of foam.

2. Microwave the milk - heat the mug of milk in the microwave for 20-40 seconds to heat the milk. Be careful to not overheat. By foaming up the milk first and then heating, I find that the foam stays nice and, well, foamy!

3. Top up the milk with fresh, hot coffee. Simply fill the mug with your fresh, strongly brewed coffee or espresso. The foam will stay at the top.

4. Add desired sweetener and toppings. Drizzle with honey, raw sugar, or agave. (Or, go for a really authentic Starbucks experience and use one of their flavored syrups at this point.) Stir a bit to distribute the sweetener throughout your easy Latte. Top with cinnamon, chocolate powder, or nutmeg.

5. Enjoy your Easy Latte - A delicious, latte-like drink for a fraction of the cost of a Starbucks latte.

Get creative with this basic technique! Add pure vanilla for a vanilla latte - you can even add the pure vanilla extract to the coffee while it's brewing to make it simple. And yes, purists, I realize this is hardly the TRUE way to make a latte, but it's a nice and easy way for the rest of us masses!

Do you make lattes at home? What's the technique you use? Do you have any tricks to make easy lattes at home? Please post a comment and share it with us coffee lovers!

HappySlobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777781387510158030noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25257758.post-69534206956141745682011-10-07T20:11:00.000-07:002011-10-07T20:12:39.199-07:00Pumpkin Spice Lattes are Back at StarbucksThey're BAAAAACK! It seems that if you limit your coffee consumption to a couple of cups or less a day (and you don't feel any ill effects from drinking that coffee) then you're probably okay with regular coffee. But, coffee has a bad effect on many people - causing them to feel jittery, nervous or even causing raised blood pressure.

If you choose to drink decaf coffee, make sure that you're drinking Swiss Water decaffeinated coffee. This is a process that naturally removes that caffeine from coffee, leaving you with a cup of coffee that is still delicious, but without the vast majority of caffeine. (Little hint for coffee lovers: a bit of caffeine remains in any decaf coffee, so don't drink too much of even the decaf if you're sensitive to caffeine!)HappySlobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777781387510158030noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25257758.post-50140485127626809552010-10-16T12:33:00.000-07:002010-10-16T12:34:29.083-07:00Espresso Machine Cookie Jar - Too Cute!I couldn't resist posting this one - a cookie jar that looks like an espresso machine. The "However you Want It" Frappuccino gives you loads of new options, like choosing a sugar free option, or soy milk instead of cow's milk. How do YOU choose your Frap?

And...I noticed on a sign the other day that Starbucks also now has an iced coffee with milk. I like that option, since frappuccinos are a bit too sweet for me (and I don't like artificial sweeteners.) Take heart! There are some healthier options that still taste delicious. Here are a few of Starbucks drinks to try if you're being more health conscious:

Decaf options - Trying to stay away from dreaded caffeine? Ask for decaf in any of your favorite drinks. There are a number of delicious iced or hot herbal teas that taste amazing, but are naturally caffeine free.

Less sugar at Starbucks - Definitely order a latte, but a plain one minus the sugar-spiked flavored syrups. Order a regular caffe latte (or fat free, if you like) and then doctor it up yourself by sprinkling on some cinnamon and nutmeg. I usually also add a little drizzle of honey to sweeten, but you don't need to if you're staying away from all types of sugar. In fact, a tall regular latte (with no sugary syrups added) packs a protein punch - 10 grams of protein! Plus, lots of vitamins and calcium to build up bones.

Vivanno smoothies - These ones also provide a wallop of protein, and include fresh fruit. Be careful if you're eating gluten free, for these ones are not!

Starbucks has also come out with a new line of healthier snack items, including gluten and dairy free cookies and healthier chips. I tried the Food Should Taste Good Sweet Potato chips - they're divine! Add a whole cinnamon stick to the coffee in your coffee maker (right in with the coffee grounds in the coffee filter.) Or, add a generous sprinkling of freshly ground cinnamon to those freshly ground coffee beans.

Add an extra layer by creating a custom coffee drink: take your cinnamon infused coffee, add some cream and sugar or honey, then top with whipped cream and another sprinkling of cinnamon or cinnamon sugar on top! Yummm...what a delicious, java treat for a cold winter's day.HappySlobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777781387510158030noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25257758.post-13426208309222560482009-06-28T18:22:00.000-07:002009-06-28T18:25:20.770-07:00Bodum Stainless French Press Coffee MakerBodum is always a classic for the perfect French Press coffee maker, but now with this Stainless variety you won't have to worry about the glass beaker breaking! What kind of coffee was it?
Was it worth every penny, or a complete waste of money?

I think the most I've ever paid is around $5-$6 for an outrageous latte at Starbucks. I've never purchased any really posh coffee, but I've heard of some that go for $15+ a cup!!HappySlobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777781387510158030noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25257758.post-83912867543650039372009-03-27T08:55:00.000-07:002009-03-27T08:56:36.050-07:00You Tell Me: What do you drink at Starbucks?Okay, fess up. We don't ALWAYS have the time or inclination to make a delicious coffee creation at home. So, when you treat yourself at Starbucks or your favorite local coffee shop, what coffee creation do you choose?

For me, I'm all about lattes. I love them extra hot, with drizzlings of honey and lots of nutmeg sprinkled on top. I know honey in coffee sounds weird, but it's actually delicious. :) And I try to convince myself that it's also healthier and more natural! heheHappySlobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06777781387510158030noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25257758.post-23580514531065523162009-02-06T12:07:00.000-08:002009-02-06T12:12:20.778-08:00Marvelous Mocha Shakes - Coffee CreationsYum...a great scoop of vanilla ice cream, some rich chocolate syrup and - of course - a healthy splash of coffee equals a fun soda fountain treat you can make at home. (And for WAYYY less money, to boot!) It couldn't get any easier than this icy treat...

1 large scoop of good vanilla ice cream per person
1 or 2% milk - the amount varies, depending on how many shakes you're making
2 tablespoons chocolate syrup per shake
About 1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee per person
A splash of vanilla (optional)
A few ice cubes (optional, but adds nice froth)

Combine in a blender until nice and frothy and smooth. Totally variable to make as many or as few mocha shakes as you need! (Or, let's face it...want!) Serve in large soda glasses with a straw.
